Waste management is a universal issue that matters to every single person in the world. Many people are ready to sort and dispose of waste. We created application which provides simple actionable steps for citizens on how to dispose of their garbage responsibly and reduce waste in general.

Problem Statement

Every day tons of waste are taken to landfills most of them won’t disappear for hundreds of years. Many people don’t know how to and where to transport waste and see no reason to start sorting their garbage.
Moreover, finding reliable donors and beneficiaries for reducing waste might be difficult and it takes a lot of time.

Solution

  • • Greencycle provides an accessible and accurate information to increase awareness about waste management in everyday life.
  • • Allows users to easily sort waste correctly and recycle waste by scanning the items in their hands.
  • • Helps users to form eco-habits, provide information about recycling spots in the nearby locations.
  • Motivates users to dispose trash in systematic way by rewarding them with points and gift cards.
  • • Helps users to reduce waste by donation. Application connects charity organizations, NGO’s and donors to each other.

During the Empathize stage we brainstormed all possible waste management problems and created a strategy document for our mobile application.

Qualitative Research

We interviewed 17 potential users over phone calls to understands the challenges they
face in waste management at home. A few sample questions are listed below.

  • What knowledge do you have about waste management?
  • Are you motivated to learn more about waste management?
  • Would you participate in the waste collection process as a volunteer and why?
  • How do you manage waste in your home?
  • What additional features would you like in our app? (Already existing features - Scanner, Bin maps, Recyclable product list, Learning module.)
  • Have you ever wanted to donate your belongings rather than throw them away? What kind of products would you like to donate?
  • What do you think would be the quickest way to find charity organizations or people who are in need?

We did an online survey using Google Forms to observe any pattern and similarity in what the potential users may want.
A total of 17 people responded which assisted us in frame the problem correctly.

Usability study findings

  • all participants could easily register

  • 5/7 participants had issue with going back to home page and bottle button had no function for them

  • 4/7 participants could not find page about point collection, but could easily switch inside pages

  • 5/7 participants wanted to have back button on both pages, and not to have two arrow in the last one

  • 5/7 participants could easily find the plastic bottle page, and they found it to be easy to navigate

  • 6/7 participants easily found the list of donors and their contact information.
